Monroe County is located in the state of West Virginia. The county was formed in January 14, 1799 and named after James Monroe. The county seat is Union. As of 2015, the county has a population of 13,506. The county has a total area of 474 square miles, 473 square miles of which is land, and 0.9 square miles is water. Monroe County borders the following counties: Greenbrier County, West Virginia to the north; Giles County, Virginia to the south; Craig County, Virginia to the east; Summers County, West Virginia to the west, and; Alleghany County, Virginia to the northeast.

The County Clerk is the official recorder and record keeper for most legal documents. These documents include births, marriages, deaths, wills, deeds, mortgages, releases and much more. The County Clerk also serves as the county’s chief election official supervising elections and voter’s registration and is responsible for maintaining custody and integrity of the county’s voting machines, conducting training for poll workers, preparing the ballot and other election duties.
