Whitman County is located in the southeastern region of Washington. Its county seat is Colfax. The county was created in 1871 from a part of Stevens County. It was named in honor of a Presbyterian missionary, Marcus Whitman, who was the first to lead a large party of wagons along the Oregon Trail going to the West. The county’s total area is 2,178 square miles with an estimated population is 49,046 (2017). The county is bordered in the north by Spokane County, in the northeast by Benewah County (ID), in the east by Latah County (ID), in the southeast by Nez Perce County (ID) and Asotin County (WA), in the south by Garfield County, in the southwest by Columbia and Franklin Counties, in the west by Adams County, and in the northwest by Lincoln County.
