Whatcom County is located in the North Puget Sound region of Washington. The county seat is Bellingham. The county was created in 1854 by the Washington Territorial Legislature. Its name is derived from the word Xwotʼqom, a Lummi (dialect of the North Straits Salish language) word for “noisy water.” The total area of the county is 2,503 square miles with an estimated population of 221,404 (2017). The adjacent counties are Fraser Valley Regional District, British Columbia in the north; Okanogan County in the east; Skagit County in the south; San Juan County in the southwest; Capital Region District, British Columbia in the west; and Greater Vancouver, British Columbia in the northwest.
