Thurston County is located in the Coastal region of Washington. The county seat is Olympia. The county was formed in 1852 from a part of Lewis County and named in honor of the first delegate of Oregon Territory to Congress, Samuel R. Thurston. The county’s total area is 774 square miles with an estimated population of 280,588 (2017). The county is bordered in the north by Mason County, in the east by Pierce County, in the south by Lewis County, and in the west by Grays Harbor County. The County Auditor performs several services for the county. One of which is to conduct all county elections, handle candidate filing, and register voters.
