Stevens County is located in the northeastern region of Washington. The county seat is Colville. The county was formed in 1863 and named in honor of the first governor of Washington Territory, Isaac Stevens. Based on the 2017 census, there are approximately 44,730 people living in the 2,541-square mile area. The county is bordered in the north by the Regional District of Central Kootenay, British Columbia; in the northeast by the Kootenay Boundary Regional District, British Columbia; in the east by Pend Oreille County; in the southeast by Spokane County; in the southwest by Lincoln County, and in the west by Ferry County. The County Auditor is responsible for issuing marriage licenses as well as handling motor vehicle licensing which includes the sale of motor vehicle and vessel licenses, the collection of license fees, title changes, and other transactions involving motor vehicles and vessels. He/she is charged with the recording and preservation of legal documents such as real estate documents, liens, and military discharges for the county.
