Skamania County is located in the southwest region of Washington. The county seat is Stevenson. Created in 1854, the county’s name is derived from the Cascades Chinook word sk’mániak which means “swift waters.” The county’s total area is 1,683 square miles with an estimated population of 11,837. The counties bordering the area are Lewis County in the north, Yakima County in the northeast, Klickitat County in the east, Hood River County (OR) in the southeast, Multnomah County (OR) in the south, Clark County in the southwest, and Cowlitz County in the west.
