Skagit County is located in the North Puget Sound region in Washington. Mount Vernon serves as the county seat. The county was created from a portion of Whatcom County in 1883. It was named in honor of the Skagit, a Native American people who are indigenous to the area. The total area of the county is 1,920 square miles. Its estimated population is 125,619 based on the 2017 census. The adjacent counties are Whatcom County in the north, Okanogan County in the northeast, Chelan County in the east, Snohomish County in the south, Island County in the southwest, and San Juan County in the west.
