San Juan County, Washington Overview

San Juan County is located in the North Puget Sound Region of Washington. Its county seat is Friday Harbor. The county was created in 1873 from a part of Whatcom County. It was named after the San Juan Islands which, in turn, were named in honor of the Viceroy of New Spain, Juan Vicente de Güemes, 2nd Count of Revillagigedo. According to the 2017 census, there are approximately 16,715 people living in the 621-square mile area. The counties bordering this area are Whatcom County in the north, Skagit County in the east, Island County in the southeast, Jefferson County in the south, Clallam County in the southwest, and Capital Regional District (British Columbia, Canada) in the west.
