Pierce County is located in the Coastal Region of Washington. Its county seat is Tacoma. The county was created in 1852 from a portion of Thurston County. It was named in honor of the 14th US President, Franklin Pierce. The county’s total area is 1,806 with an estimated population of 876,764 (2017), making this the second most populated county in the state. The adjacent counties are King County in the north, Yakima County in the east, Lewis County in the south, Thurston County in the southwest, Mason County in the west, and Kitsap County in the northwest. In order to obtain a marriage license in Pierce County, the applicants must apply together, in person, at the County Clerk’s office. Both parties must present their state-issued picture ID, military ID, or passport, and know their social security number
