Mason County is located in the Coastal Region of Washington. The county seat is Shelton. The county was created in 1854 from a portion of King County. It was originally calle Sawamish County before it was changed in 1864 to honor the first Secretary of Washington Territory, Charles H. Mason. The total area of the county is 1,051 square miles with an estimated population of 63,710. The adjacent counties are Jefferson County in the north, Kitsap County in the northeast, Pierce County in the east, Thurston County in the south, and Grays Harbor County in the west.
