Jefferson County is located in the Coastal region of Washington. The county seat is Port Townsend. The county was created from a portion of Thurston County in 1852 and named in honor of Thomas Jefferson, the principal author of the Declaration of Independence and the 3rd US President. The total area of the county is 2,183 square miles with a population of 31,234 (2017). The counties surrounding the area are Challam County in the north, San Juan County in the northeast, Island County in the east, Kitsap County in the southeast, Mason County in the south, and Grays Harbor in the southwest.
