York County Overview

York County in Virginia was established in 1634 and lies in the eastern part of the state (Tidewater region). The population was 65,464 as of the 2010 census. The county is Yorktown and Bethel Manor is the largest community. The county, which is the third smallest by land area has 105 square miles of land, plus 110 square miles of water. It is near the mouth of the Chesapeake Bay. York County contains many tributaries of the York River. It shares land borders with the independent cities of Williamsburg, Newport News, Hampton, and Poquoson, as well as James City County, and shares a border along the York River with Gloucester County. It is one of the eight original shires (counties) of the Virginia Colony, York County is one of the oldest counties in the United States. Yorktown is one of the three points of the Historic Triangle of Colonial Virginia. It is the site of the last battle and surrender of British forces in 1781 at the end of the American Revolutionary War, when the patriots gained independence from Great Britain. Border counties are: Gloucester to the northeast, Mathews to the east, Northampton to the east, Poquoson to the southeast, Hampton to the south, Newport News to the southwest, James City to the west, and Williamsburg to the west. The county is also home to a portion of the nationally protected Colonial National Historical Park. York County is home to several large and important military facilities of the United States. Located along the York River, small portions of each base extend into adjacent James City County as well. Of the ten zip codes currently used by the county, the most populous is 23693.
