Wise County Overview

Wise County in Virginia was created in 1856 and named for then Virginia Governor, Henry A. Wise. The county seat is Wise, and the largest community is Big Stone Gap. The population as of the 2010 census was 41,452. Virginia’s two highest security state prisons are in Wise County: Red Onion State Prison, opened in 1998, and Wallens Ridge State Prison, opened in 1999. In July of 2012 Dominion Energy built Virginia City Hybrid Energy Center in Wise County, one of the most technology advance modern hybrid energy power plant in operation today, powering 150,000 homes using coal and bio-fuels. The county has a total area of 405 square miles, almost all of which is land. The county is part of the Appalachians and has many mountainous features, including the peak of High Knob and Powell Valley. Adjacent counties are: Letcher, Kentucky to the northwest, Pike, Kentucky to the north, Harlan, and Kentucky to the west. Other neighboring counties are all in Virginia: Dickenson to the northeast, Russell to the east, Scott to the south, Lee to the southwest, and Norton is enclaved in the county. The county is also home to a portion of nationally protected Jefferson National Forest. Of the eight zip codes utilized by the county, the most populous is 24293.
