Named for the father of our country when it was created in 1776, Washington County in Virginia had a population of 54,876 as of the 2010 census. The county seat is Abingdon and it is also the largest community. The county’s total area is 561 square miles of land, plus five square miles of water. Neighboring counties are: Russell to the northwest, Scott to the west, Bristol to the southwest, Grayson to the east/southeast, and Smyth to the northeast. Two additional neighbors are in Tennessee: Johnson to the south/southeast, and Sullivan to the southwest. The county is home to portions of two nationally protected areas: Jefferson National Forest and Mount Rogers National Recreation Area.
