Shenandoah County Overview

The largest community is Strasburg, the county seat is Woodstock, and Shenandoah County in Virginia was created in 1772. The county name is believed to be associated with The Senedos, possibly an Iroquoian group. They occupied the area at one time, until they were said to have been slaughtered by the Catawba in the later 17th century. The name of both the Valley and of the County is most likely connected with this Native American group. As of the 2010 census, the population was 41,993 and the total area was 512 square miles, almost all of which is land. The Fort Valley and western slopes of the Massanutten Mountain are located within the county. The county is home to portions of two nationally protected areas: Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historical Park and the George Washington National Forest. Bordering counties are: Rockingham to the southwest, Page to the southeast, Warren to the east, Frederick to the northeast, and Hardy West Virginia to the northwest.
