Russell County Overview

Established in 1786, and named for Colonel William Russell, who was born in Culpeper County, Russell County in Virginia had a population of 28,897 as of the 2010 census. The county seat is also the largest community, Lebanon. The largest cattle farm East of the Mississippi River, and one of the oldest corporations in the country, Stuart Land & Cattle, is headquartered at Rosedale in Russell County. The county has 477 square miles total area and almost all of it is land. The 4th highest peak in VA is located on the eastern part of the county, Beartown Mountain. Neighboring counties are: Dickenson to the northwest, Wise to the west, Scott to the southwest, Washington to the south, Smyth to the southeast, Tazewell to the east, and Buchanan to the north.
