Pulaski County Overview

Named for Count Casimir Pulaski, an exiled Polish nobleman who fought during the American Revolution as part of George Washington’s army, Pulaski County in Virginia was established in 1839. The population was 34,872 as of the 2010 census. The county seat, Pulaski is also the largest community. Pulaski County is the site of Claytor Lake State Park, which is located on Claytor Lake, a 4,500-acre, 21-mile long man-made lake on the New River created for a hydroelectric project of Appalachian Power Company. It is named for W. Graham Claytor, Sr. of Roanoke, Virginia, a vice president of Appalachian Power who supervised construction of the dam and creation of the lake. The county has ten square miles of water area and an additional 320 square miles of land. Pulaski is also home to a portion of the nationally protected Jefferson National Forest. Neighboring counties are: Wythe to the southwest, Carroll to the south, Floyd to the southeast, Radford to the northeast, Montgomery to the northeast, Giles to the north, and Bland to the northwest.
