Prince William County Overview

Established in 1731 and named for the third son of King George II, Prince William, Duke of Cumberland, Prince William County in Virginia is home to the Marine Corps Heritage Museum and the Hylton Performing Arts Center opened in the 21st century. The American Wartime Museum is also in this county. During the commemoration of the Sesquicentennial of the Civil War, re-enactment of the famous First and Second Battles of Manassas were scheduled. The county’s population was 451,721 as of the 2010 census, and it was the second most populous county in the state. The county seat is Manassas and Dumfries is the largest community. The county is also home to Quantico Marine Corps Base, and the FBI Academy. The total area is 336 square miles of land, plus 12 square miles of water. It is bounded on the north by Loudoun and Fairfax Counties; on the west by Fauquier County; on the south by Stafford County; and on the east by the Potomac River (Charles County, Maryland lies across the river to the southeast), Manassas and Manassas Park are in the center of the county. Several nationally protected areas are within the county lines: Featherstone National Wildlife Refuge, Manassas National Battlefield Park, Occoquan Bay National Wildlife Refuge, and Prince William Forest Park. The Code of Virginia lists more than 800 responsibilities of the Clerk, many of which are complex and challenging. The Clerk serves as the recorder of deeds and probate judge, issues marriage licenses and fictitious names, and is the official court administrator for all civil and criminal court cases.
