Pittsylvania County Overview

With a population of 63,506 as of the 2010 census, Pittsylvania County in Virginia is the largest in the state by land area (969 square miles), and the second largest to total area (978 square miles). The county was created in 1767 and its county seat is Chatham; however, Hurt is the largest community. The largest undeveloped uranium deposit in the United States — and the seventh largest in the world is in Pittsylvania County, which was named for William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham, who served as Prime Minister of Great Britain from 1766 to 1768 and opposed harsh colonial policies. The county is bounded on the north by the Roanoke River, intersected by the Banister River through the middle, and drained by the Dan River on the south.
