Page County, Virginia was established in 1831 and named for a former state governor, John Page. As of the 2010 census, the population was 24,042, and the county seat and largest community is Luray. With a total area of 311 square miles of land, and three-square miles of water, the highest point in Page County is Hawksbill Mountain, which is located along the border with Madison County within Shenandoah National Park. Neighboring counties are: Rockingham to the south, Greene to the southeast, Madison to the southeast, Rappahannock to the east, Warren to the north, and Shenandoah to the northwest. As noted earlier, the county is home to a portion of the Shenandoah National Park, and the George Washington National Forest, both nationally protected areas.
