Northumberland County Overview

Of the 172 counties that have ever existed in Virginia’s history, Northumberland ended up being an “ancestor” to 116 of these, more than the current 95 counties (several were lost to other states, such as West Virginia). Northumberland was created in 1648 and it is located on the Northern Neck and is part of the Northern Neck George Washington Birthplace AVA winemaking designation. As of the 2010 census, the population was 12,330. The county seat of Heathsville, is also the largest community. The county has a total area of 191 square miles of land, plus 94 square miles of water. The county is located between the Rappahannock River to the south and Potomac River to the north. The Chesapeake Bay is immediately east of the county, Lancaster county is to the south, Richmond to the west, Westmoreland to the northwest, and St. Mary’s County, Maryland to the north. Of the eight zip codes used by the county, 22473 is the most populous.
