Northampton County Overview
This county in Virginia, is the center of the late Eocene meteor strike that resulted in the Chesapeake Bay impact crater. The Northampton County Courthouse Historical District is part of the Eastville Historical District at the county seat, which is in Eastville. The county was established in 1634 and had a population of 12,389 as of the 2010 census. Northampton and Accomack Counties comprise the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Northampton is a total of 212 square miles of land, plus 584 square miles of water. Beside Accomack, which lies to the north, Virginia Beach neighbors to the south. The county is also home to the Eastern Shore of Virginia National Wildlife Refuge and the Fisherman Island National Wildlife Refuge, both nationally protected areas.
