Montgomery County Overview
This county. Montgomery, Virginia was created in 1772 and named for Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general who was killed in 1775 while attempting to capture Quebec City, Canada. As of the 2010 census, the population was 94,392 and it lies in the New River watershed portion of the county. The county seat is Christiansburg, and Blacksburg is the largest community. The total area is 389 square miles almost all of which is land. The county is home to a portion of the nationally protected Jefferson National Forest. Adjacent counties are: Craig to the north, Giles to the northwest, Radford (city) to the west, Pulaski to the southwest, Floyd to the south, and Roanoke to the east.
