King William County Overview
King William County in Virginia was established in 1702 and named for William of Orange, King of England. The Courthouse, built in 1725, is the oldest courthouse in continuous use in the United States. As of the 2010 census, the population was 15,935. The county has a total area of 274 square miles of land, plus 12 square miles of water. The county seat is King William. King William County is bounded by the Mattaponi River to the north and the Pamunkey River to the south. The two rivers combine to form the York River, at West Point, the county’s largest town. Adjacent counties are Caroline to the northwest, King and Queen to the northeast, New Kent to the south, and Hanover to the southwest. The most populous zip code in the county is 23009, and it is one of six utilized.
