King and Queen County Overview
On the Middle Peninsula on the eastern side of the state, King and Queen County in Virginia, was created in 1691 and named for King William III and Queen Mary II of England. The population was 6,945 as of the 2010 census, and it is one of the few counties in the United States to have recorded a larger population in the 1790 census than in the 2010 one. The county seat is King and Queen Courthouse. The total area of the county is 315 square miles of land, plus 11 square miles of water. Neighboring counties are Caroline to the north, Essex to the northeast, Middlesex to the east, Gloucester to the southeast, James City to the south, New Kent to the southwest, and King William to the west.
