James City County Overview

With its county seat in Williamsburg, James City County in Virginia was established in 1619. As of the 2010 census, it had a population of 67,009. Williamsburg is also the largest community in the county. At the turn of the 21st century, new archaeological work was underway at Jamestown and nearby Green Spring Plantation, with the premise of new historical discoveries. Each is especially attractive to archaeologists because of the lack of development after the mid-19th century. Another archeological site, Wolstenholme Towne at Carter’s Grove, was protected by covenants when it was sold in 2007 and may see future activity. The county has a total area of 142 square miles of land, plus 37 square miles of water, with total acreage at 115,012 acres. James City County straddles two major watersheds, the James River Watershed and the York River Watershed. (Both are sub watersheds of the Chesapeake Bay watershed, which stretches from Pennsylvania to Virginia). Within the James River and York watersheds are eleven sub watersheds: Diascund Creek, Ware Creek, Yarmouth Creek, Gordon Creek, Powhatan Creek, Mill Creek, College Creek, James River, York River, Skiffe’s Creek and Chickahominy River. Adjacent counties are: Charles City to the west, Surry to the south, Newport News to the southeast, Williamsburg to the east, York to the east, Gloucester to the northeast, King and Queen to the northeast, and New Kent to the northwest. The county is home to the Jamestown National Historic Site and to a portion of the Colonial National Historical Park, both of which are nationally protected. Five zip codes are used in the county, the most populous is 23185.
