Greene County Overview

Created in 1838, Greene County in eastern Virginia had a population of 18,403 as of the 2010 census. The county seat is Stanardsville; however, Twin Lakes is the largest community. The county was named for Nathanael Greene, who was an American Revolutionary War hero. A major incident occurred on October 24, 1979, when a natural gas main ruptured, causing an explosion. The resulting fire destroyed the bell tower of the county courthouse and county office building. However, quick action by the firemen on the scene saved the county records which were secured in the vault. The county, which has a total area of only 157 square miles is the second smallest county in the state by total area. Adjacent counties are: Rockingham to the west, Page to the northwest, Madison to the northeast, Orange to the southeast, and Albemarle to the south. The county is also home to a portion of nationally protected Shenandoah National Park. The largest zip code in the county is 22968, and it is one of five total zips assigned to the county.
