Giles County Overview
Giles county in Virginia was founded in 1806 and named for William Branch Giles, who served the nation for nearly 40 years in several capacities. The county seat and largest community is Pearisburg and as of the 2010 census, the county population was 17,286. Giles County is the location of Mountain Lake, one of only two natural fresh water lakes in Virginia. The lake drains into Little Stony Creek, which passes over a waterfall known as The Cascades before reaching the New River. The county has a total area of 356 square miles of land, plus four-square miles of water. Bordering counties include two in West Virginia, Summers and Monroe, both to the north, and Mercer to the northwest. Remaining neighbors are in Virginia and include: Craig to the east, Montgomery to the southeast, Pulaski to the south, and Bland to the west.
