Frederick County Overview

Created in 1743 and named for Frederick Louis, Prince of Wales, the eldest son of King George II of Great Britain, Frederick County, Virginia had a population of 78,305 as of the 2010 census. The county seat is Winchester, and the largest community is Stephens City. Winchester changed hands between the Confederate and Union Armies on average once every three weeks during the war. Many battles were fought in Frederick County. Some of those battles include: First Battle of Kernstown, March 1862, First Battle of Winchester, May 1862, Second Battle of Winchester, June 1863, Second Battle of Kernstown, July 1864, Third Battle of Winchester (Battle of Opequon), September 1864, and Battle of Cedar Creek, October 1864. The total area of the county is 416 square miles, almost all of which is land. Adjacent counties are: Clarke to the east, Warren to the south, Shenandoah to the southwest, and Winchester is surrounded by Frederick County. Several West Virginia counties are also neighbors: Hardy to the southwest, Hampshire to the west, Morgan to the north, and Berkeley to the northeast. Frederick County is home to portions of two nationally protected areas: Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historical Park and George Washington National Forest.
