Floyd County Overview

Named for once Virginia governor, John Floyd when it was created in 1831, Floyd county in Virginia has a strong music and literary scene. Three establishments in Floyd regularly offer a variety of live music during the weekends ranging from traditional styles such as Bluegrass and Old-timey music to contemporary and alternative acts. Best known is the Friday Night Jamboree held at The Floyd Country Store. Both the Country Store and County Records, founded in the 1960s, are featured on the Virginia Heritage Music Trail called “The Crooked Road.” In the early 21st century, Floyd became the home of an annual world music festival called FloydFest. The Chateau Morrisette and Villa Appalaccia wineries have been established since the 1980s. The population, as of the 2010 census was 15,279. The county seat of Floyd, is also the largest community. Bordering counties are: Patrick to the southeast, Carroll to the southwest, Pulaski to the northwest, Motgomery to the northwest, and Roanoke to the north. The county is home to the Buffalo Mountain Natural Area Preserve and to a portion of the Blue Ridge Parkway, both nationally protected areas.
