Fauquier County Overview
Fauquier County was established on May 1, 1759, and named for Francis Fauquier, Lieutenant Governor of Virginia at the time, who won the land in a poker game, according to legend. American Civil War battles in Fauquier County included (in order) the First Battle of Rappahannock Station, the Battle of Thoroughfare Gap, the Battle of Kelly’s Ford, the Battle of Aldie, the Battle of Middleburg, the Battle of Upperville, the First and Second Battle of Auburn, the Battle of Buckland Mills, and the Second Battle of Rappahannock Station. As of the 2010 census, the county had a population of 65,203. The county has a total area of 647 square miles of land, plus four-square miles of water. Warrenton is both the county seat, and the largest community. Adjacent counties are: Clarke to the north, Loudoun to the north, Prince William to the east, Stafford to the southeast, Culpeper to the southwest, Rappahannock to the west, and Warren to the northwest. Clerk serves as Recorder of deeds, Court Administrator, Probate Judge, and Records custodian. As Court Administrator, the Clerk processes all civil and criminal cases, maintains all court files and records, issues court subpoenas, prepares court orders, and oversees the jury selection process.
