Dinwiddie County Overview

Created in 1752 and named for Robert Dinwiddie, a former Lieutenant Governor of Virginia, Dinwiddie County in Virginia had a population of 28,001 as of the 2010 census. Several Civil War battles were fought in the area including the: Battle of Peebles’ Farm, Battle of Lewis’s Farm, Battle of Dinwiddie Court House (which is now occupied by the county historical society), Battle of White Oak Road, Battle of Five Forks, and Battle of Sutherland’s Station. The county seat and largest community is Dinwiddie. Dinwiddie is in southern Virginia, southwest of the independent city of Petersburg. The county has a total area of 504 square miles of land and four-square miles of water. It is also located between two US Army forts, Fort Lee to the east and Fort Pickett to the west. Adjacent counties are: Amelia to the northwest, Nottoway to the west, Brunswick to the southwest, Greensville to the south, Sussex to the southeast, Prince George to the east, Petersburg to the northeast, and Chesterfield to the north. The county is also home to a portion of the nationally protected Petersburg National Battlefield. Twelve zip codes are deployed for use in the county, the most populous of which is 23803.
