Craig County, Virginia was named for 19th century Virginia congressman, Robert Craig, and was created in 1851. As of the 2010 census, the population was 5,190, one of Virginia’s smaller counties by both population and total area, which is 331 square miles, nearly all of which is land. New Castle is both the county seat and the largest community. Craig Healing Springs, a collection of well-preserved early-20th-century resort buildings representative of the architecture of Virginia’s more modest mountain spas, is located inside the county as is a portion of the nationally protected Jefferson National Forest. Adjacent counties are: Alleghany to the north, Botetourt to the east, Roanoke to the southeast, Montgomery to the south, Giles to the southwest, and Monroe County, West Virginia to the west.
