Chesterfield County Overview

Created in 1749, Chesterfield County in Virginia was named for an English statesman, Philip Stanhope, 4th Earl of Chesterfield. The county seat is Chesterfield Court House, and the largest community is Chester. The population was 316,236 as of the2010 census. The county has a total area of 423 square miles of land plus 14 square miles of water. Chesterfield County is largely bordered by two rivers which define miles of its boundaries. The major adjoining cities each originated at the head of navigation of these river, called the fall line. There, the hillier and rockier Piedmont region falls to the sandy and mostly flat eastern coastal plain Tidewater region, a change which creates barriers for ships going upstream on the rivers. Chesterfield County borders on the Appomattox River to the south. Adjacent counties are: Henrico and Richmond (city)to the northeast, Charles City to the east, Hopewell, Prince George, Petersburg and Colonial Heights to the southeast, Dinwiddie to the south, Amelia to the southwest, and Powhatan to the northwest. The county is home to a portion of the Richmond National Battlefield, and to the Presquile National Wildlife Refuge, both nationally protected areas. Of the 17 zip codes utilized by the county, 23112 is the most populous.
