Charlotte County Overview
Charlotte County, Virginia formed in 1764 is in the south-central portion of Virginia. A heavily rural area, it is a total of 475 square miles in size, almost all of which is land. The name is in honor of Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III of England and it was the home of Patrick Henry, a founding father. Keysville is the largest community and the county seat is Charlotte Court House. As of the 2010 census, the county had a population of 12,586. Charlotte county is bounded on the southwest by the Roanoke River (and Halifax County), locally known as the “Staunton River”. Other adjacent counties are: Prince Edward to the north, Lunenburg to the east, Mecklenburg to the southeast, Campbell to the west, and Appomattox to the northwest.
