Charles City County Overview

Established in 1619 and named for King Charles I of England, Charles City County, in Virginia lies between the James River to the south, and the Chickahominy River to the east. It was one of the original five shires of Virginia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 7,256, and the county seat is Charles City. Both the 9th and 10th Presidents of the United States, William Henry Harrison and John Tyler were area natives. The total area of the county is 183 square miles of land, plus 21 square miles of water. Adjacent counties are: New Kent to the north, James City to the east, Surry to the southeast, Prince George to the south, Chesterfield to the southwest, and Henrico to the west. Charles City County features some of the larger and older James River plantations along State Route 5. Although they are privately owned, several of the houses and/or grounds are open daily to visitors with various admission fees applicable. Some James River plantations open to the public, listed from west to east, include Shirley Plantation, Edgewood Plantation and Harrison’s Mill, Berkeley Plantation, Westover Plantation, Belle Air Plantation, Piney Grove at Southall’s Plantation, North Bend Plantation, and Sherwood Forest Plantation.
