Carroll County Overview

Created in 1842, Carroll County, Virginia is part of both the Piedmont region and the Appalachian Mountain region. The county seat of Hillsville is also the largest community. Its name is in honor of a signer of the Declaration of Independence, Charles Carroll. With a total area of 478 square miles, most of which is land, the county had a population of 30,042 as of the 2010 census. The county is home to portions of three nationally protected areas: Blue Ridge Parkway, Jefferson National Forest, and Mount Rogers National Recreation Area. Adjacent counties are Galax and Grayson to the west, Wythe to the northwest, Pulaski to the north, Floyd to the northeast, Patrick to the southeast, and Surry County in North Carolina to the south.
