Buckingham County Overview

Created in 1761, the rural, and forested county of Buckingham lies in the state of Virginia in the Piedmont region. It is believed that the county’s name was in honor of the Duke of Buckingham. The county celebrated its 250th anniversary in 2011, and as of the 2010 census the population was 17,146. The total area of the count is 580 square miles of land, plus four-square miles of water. Adjacent counties are: Fluvanna to the northeast, Cumberland to the east, Prince Edward to the south, Appomattox to the southwest, Nelson to the west, and Albemarle to the northwest. The geographic center of Virginia is in Buckingham County, near the Mt. Rush community. Eleven zip codes have been deployed for use in the county, the largest of which is 23936.
