Appomattox County Overview

Established in 1845, Appomattox County, Virginia lies in the Piedmont region of the state. It’s county seat of Appomattox is also the largest community. Its name comes from the Appomattox River, which was named for the Appamatuck Native American tribe. Historically, the county is best known for being the site of lee’s surrender which ended the American Civil War. As of the 2010 census, the population was 14,973. The county has a total area of 335 square miles, almost all of which is water. Adjacent counties are: Amherst to the northwest, Campbell to the southwest, Charlotte to the south, Prince Edward to the southeast, Buckingham the northeast, and Nelson to the north.
