Alleghany County Overview
Alleghany County, Virginia was created in 1822, and named for the Alleghany Mountains. Covington is both the county seat and the largest community. The population was 16,250 as of the 2010 census. The total area of the county is 445 square miles of land, plus four-square miles of water. The county is home to portions of two nationally protected areas: the George Washington National Forest, and the US National Radio Quiet Zone. Two West Virginia counties border to the west (Greenbrier) and northwest (Monroe). Virginia border counties are: Craig to the south, Botetourt to the southeast, Rockbridge to the east, and Bath to the north. Of the seven zip codes assigned to the county, the most populous is 24426.
