Accomack County Overview

Established in 1601, Accomack County is one of two that make up Virginia’s Eastern Shore, which is part of the Delmarva Peninsula bordered by both the Atlantic Ocean and the Chesapeake Bay. The county seat is Accomack; however, Chincoteague is the largest community. As of the 2010 census, the population was 33,164. Accomack is the largest county in the state by total area, which is 450 square miles of land, plus 861 square miles of water. Adjacent counties are in both Virginia and Maryland: Somerset, MB to the northwest, Worchester, MD to the northeast, Northampton, VA to the south, Middlesex, Northumberland, and Lancaster, VA to the west, and Northumberland, VA. The county is home to the Wallops Island National Wildlife Refuge, and to a portion of Assateague Island National Seashore, Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge, and Martin National Wildlife Refuge, all nationally protected areas.
