Washington County can be found in the central part of Vermont. The county seat is the municipality of Montpelier. The county was originally created as Jefferson County in 1810 from portions of Caledonia, Chittenden, and Orange Counties. It was organized in 1811. In 1814, the Federalists had control of the Vermont Legislature and changed the name of the county to Washington. The county’s total area measures 695 square miles. According to the 2016 census, approximately 58,504 people are living in this area.
