Essex County, Vermont Overview

Essex County can be found in the northeastern portion of Vermont. Its shire town is Guildhall. The county was formed in 1792 and organized 8 years later in 1800. It was named after the county of Essex in England. The county measures 675 square miles (total area). According to the 2015 census, approximately 6,163 people live in the area, making this the least populated county in the state as well as in all of New England. The adjacent counties are Coaticook MRC (QC, Canada) in the north, Coos County (NH) in the east, Grafton County (NH) in the south, Caledonia County in the west, and Orleans County in the northwest.
