Salt Lake County Overview

Established in 1850, Salt Lake County, Utah had a population of 1,029,655 as of the 2010 census, and it was the most populous county in the state. The county seat, the largest city and the state capital is Salt Lake City. Salt Lake County occupies the Salt Lake Valley, as well as parts of the surrounding mountains, the Oquirrh Mountains to the west and the Wasatch Range to the east (essentially the entire Jordan River watershed north of the Traverse Mountains). In addition, the northwestern section of the county includes part of the Great Salt Lake. The county is noted for its ski resorts; Salt Lake City won the bid to host the 2002 Winter Olympics. The county has a total area of 742 square miles of land, plus 65 square miles of water. These facts make it the fifth smallest county in the state. The county borders on the Great Salt Lake and is intersected by the Jordan River. Bordering counties are: Tooele to the west, Utah to the south, Wasatch to the southeast, Summit to the east, Morgan to the northeast, and Davis to the north.
