Iron County Overview
Named for the iron mines just west of Cedar City, Iron County in Utah was formed in 1851. The population was 46,163 as of the 2010 census, and the county seat is Parowan. Cedar City is the largest community. The county was originally named Little Salt Lake Valley. The total area of Iron county is 3,301 square miles, almost all of which is land. A small part of Zion National Park extends northward into the county, near Kanarraville. Cedar Breaks National Monument is located entirely within the county, near its southeastern corner. Both are nationally protected areas, along with portions of Dixie National Forest and Fishlake National Forest, both of which partially lie within county lines. One Nevada county borders to the west (Lincoln), and remaining neighbors are all in Utah. They are: Beaver to the north, Garfield to the east, Kane to the southeast, and Washington to the south. The Iron County Clerk, directs the Elections, issues all licenses for marriages, business, and processes passports for qualified candidates. The Clerk also serves as the billing/collection division for the Special Service Area #1 (garbage collection) and is responsible for preparing agendas and taking minutes of the Board of County Commission meetings.
