Washington County Overview
Washington County in Utah lies in the southwest corner of the state. It was established in 1856 and named for the first POTUS. It is the fifth most populous county in the state with a population of 138,115 as of the 2010 census. St. George is both the county seat and the largest community. Washington County experienced the fifth-highest job-growth rate in the United States at one point. The total area is almost all land at 2,430 square miles, only four of which is water. The elevation varies from 2,178 to 10,365 feet. The lowest point in the state of Utah is in the Beaver Dam Wash in Washington County, where it (seasonally) flows out of Utah and into Arizona. Washington County is made up of three major geographic areas; the Colorado Plateau in the east-northeast, the Great Basin in the northwest and the Mojave Desert in the south-southwest. Neighboring counties are: Iron County, Utah to the north, Kane County, Utah to the east, Mohave County, Arizona to the south, and Lincoln County, Nevada to the west. The county is also home to all or portions of four nationally protected areas: Beaver Dam Wash National Conservation Area, Dixie National Forest, Red Cliffs National Conservation Area, and Zion National Park. There are 18 official wilderness areas in Washington County that are part of the National Wilderness Preservation System. Most are entities managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM), but some are integral parts of the above listed protected areas. Two of these extend into neighboring counties. Many of the BLM wildernesses are not much more than small appendages of Zion Wilderness in Zion National Park.
