Summit County Overview
Organized in 1851, Summit County, Utah was named because it includes 39 of the highest mountain peaks in the state. The county seat is Coalville; however, Park City is the largest community. The population was 36,324 as of the 2010 census. The county’s average elevation is 8,388 feet above sea level, which is the second-highest of any county outside Colorado. Owing to its proximity to Salt Lake City, Park City has acquired a reputation as an upscale getaway, bringing new development to the area. The total area of the county is 1,882 square miles of land, plus ten square miles of water. Adjacent counties are: Rich to the north, Morgan to the northwest, Salt Lake to the west, Wasatch to the south, Duchesne to the south, and Daggett to the east. In addition, two Wyoming counties border to the northeast (Sweetwater) and the north (Uinta). The county is also home to portions of two nationally protected areas: Ashley National Forest and Wasatch National Forest. Of the nine zip codes utilized by the county, the most populous is 84098.
