Named after Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, the county seat is Edinburg and it has a population of 774,769 as of 2010. The county has a total area of 1583 square miles, with its land area encompassing 1571 square miles, and its water area 12 square miles. The county consists of 28 ZIP codes, with ZIP code 78572 recorded as the one with the largest population. Moreover, Hidalgo County borders the following counties: Brooks County, Texas to the north; Gustavo Díaz Ordaz, Tamaulipas and Reynosa Municipality and Río Bravo Municipality to the south; Willacy County, Texas and Cameron County, Texas to the east; Starr County, Texas to the west; Kenedy County, Texas to the northeast, and; Matamoros Municipality, Tamaulipas to the southeast.
