Harrison County, Texas Overview

Harrison County is located in the state of Texas. The county was formed in 1842 and named after Jonas Harrison. The county seat is Marshall. As of 2010, the county has a population of 65,631. The county has a total area of 916 square miles, 900 square miles of which is land, and 16 square miles is water. The county consists of 12 ZIP codes, with ZIP code 75670 recorded as the one with the largest population. Harrison County borders the following counties: Marion County, Texas to the north; Panola County, Texas to the south; Caddo Parish, Louisiana to the east; Gregg County, Texas to the west; Upshur County, Texas to the northwest, and; Rusk County, Texas to the southwest.

Harrison County Clerk Information

The County Clerk is the county recorder. As county recorder, the County Clerk is responsible for: processing, filing, and recording most of the official county documents (i.e.) real and personal property records, liens, assumed names, abstracts, bonds, livestock marks and brands, city, county and school district budgets, subdivision plats, military discharges, marriage licenses, birth and death certificates, and wills, providing indexing and public access to these records, issuing certified and non-certified copies of any documents recorded in this office, and assessing, collecting, and reporting the fees and cost The County Clerk is also the records administrator for Commissioners Court and the County Courts at Law. The clerk’s office supplies support personnel for civil, criminal, probate, mental, and juvenile court matters. Also, as an ex-officio member of Commissioners Court, the County Clerk serves as recorder and records manager.

The following are the required things or instructions that must be followed in applying for a birth or death certificate application: An application must be submitted, applicant must be a qualified applicant in accordance with state law, you must have a state approved ID, the cost of a copy of a certified birth certificate is $23.00, cash or credit card, the cost of a copy of a certified death certificate is $21.00, cash or credit card, for the first certificate and $4.00 for each additional certificate that is issued at the same time, you may mail application in with the correct fee with a copy of your ID, an application mailed in must be signed before a notary public.
