Walworth County is located in the U.S. state of South Dakota. The county was formed in 1873 and named after Walworth County, Wisconsin. The county seat is Shelby. According to the U.S. Census Bureau of 2016, the county has a population of approximately 5,438 people. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 745 square miles, of which 709 square miles is land and 36 square miles is water. Walworth County borders the following counties: Campbell County, South Dakota to the north; Edmunds County, South Dakota to the east; Potter County, South Dakota to the south; Dewey County, South Dakota to the southwest; and Corson County, South Dakota to the northwest. The primary administrative duties of the Clerk of Courts Office include: handling requests for information on court procedures, fees, court dates, and forms; maintaining court files; processing traffic tickets and other criminal complaints, receipting and disbursing fines, fees, costs, bond and restitutions. The Clerk also works closely with the public, law enforcement and attorneys in maintaining judges’ calendars of court dates and assisting judges in the courtroom. In addition, the Clerk of Courts is responsible for summoning and qualifying jurors, assist judge in juror selection process, and authorize payment of jurors. Other miscellaneous duties of the Clerk include: setting bond, handling initial appearances, issuing warrants, entering default judgments in small claims cases and performing marriages.
